Abstract

The pigmenting activity of xanthophyll is increased by treating the xanthophyll with sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide. The treatment may be effected by treating the plant material, e.g. marigold petal, in which the xanthophyll is found but it is preferably done after drying and finely dividing the plant material. The xanthophyll may also be first separated from the plant material or the treatment may be effected at the same time as the extraction. The process may be carried out by mixing the xanthophyll with the alkali, preferably in the presence of a polar organic liquid. The treatment may be carried out at a temperature in the range from 0 DEG to 150 DEG C. Where the treatment is carried out in an organic liquid, it is effected at the reflux temperature of the liquid.
