Abstract

604,196. Bearings. AUGEREAU, G. G. E. Jan. 31, 1945, No. 2474. Convention date, May 13, 1942. [Class 12 (i)] A bearing for journals, crank-pins, big-ends of connecting rods, has, in the recess 5 usually filled with a fixed antifriction metal lining, a thin removable shell 4 of standardized size, faced with a thin layer of antifriction metal 3, this shell being inserted in the recess with, if necessary, a shim 11 of proper thickness to take up for any wear or regrinding of the journal which has occurred and the shell is secured in the bearing by being forced into intimate contact by driving in an axiallyextending key piece 6. The bearing is further provided with separate end cheeks or rings 8, similarly faced with antifriction metal 9, such rings being secured to the bearing body by screws or soldering with the interposition of take-up rings 12 to compensate for any wear of the shaft collar which has occurred. The end cheeks serve to retain the shell axially. After wear of the journal has occurred a new spacer shim of suitable thickness is inserted in the bearing and a standard thickness shell is then forced into contact therewith. The invention is applicable to locomotive axleboxes.
