Abstract

168,322. Florell, Y. Aug. 24, 1920, [Convention date]. Ball, roller, and cylindrical-journal bearings.- An antifriction and a sliding friction bearing for axle boxes &c. are mounted one upon the other. A shaft 1, Fig. 1, carries a sleeve bearing 3 with Babbitt-metal lining 2. The sleeve is divided and has a conical outer surface carrying the inner race-ring of an antifriction bearing 4 which is clamped in position by a nut 6 threaded on the sleeve 3. Between the casing 7 and the outer race-ring there is inserted a layer 10 of a fusible material such as ebonite or rubber. The sleeve 3 extends axially beyond the antifriction bearing, and the casing 7 is provided with axial extensions 22, 23 so that it encloses the whole friction bearing except the end of a central projection 15 which projects through a packing 19 to show whether the friction bearing is in action. The extension 22 is provided with two packings 20, 21 bearing against the sleeve 3 and the shaft respectively. The extensions have projections 17, 18, which may be rifled, to engage the sleeve 3 when the casing 7 descends due to melting of the layer 10, thus bringing the friction bearing into operation. A screw 16 or wedge or other device may be operated to engage stops on the sleeve 3 to bring the friction bearing into operation. According to the Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a), the inner race-ring of the antifriction hearing may be clamped on the conical outer surface of the sleeve 3 by a sleeve 5 and screw 6, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), packings 8, 9 being arranged between the casing and sleeve 3, and the sides 13, 14 of the casing being adapted to lock against the sleeve 3 on melting of the layer 10. Or an ebonite ring 10, Fig. 6 (Cancelled) may be placed laterally between the inner race and a spring-pressed sleeve 29, so that, when the ebonite melts, the sleeve 29 enters between the casing and the friction bearing and locks them together. In a thrust bearing, the shaft 1, Fig. 5 (Cancelled), may abut through an ebonite ring 10 against an antifriction bearing 24, which in turn abuts against the frame 26 through the friction bearing 25, which comes into operation when the ebonite melts. This subject-matter dces not appear in the Specification as accepted.
