Abstract

607,400. Bearings. HOYT METAL CO. (OF GREAT BRITAIN), Ltd., and HART, J. C. Feb. 1, 1946, No. 3298. [Class 12 (i)] A shaft journal has a coating of anti-friction metal intimately secured thereto and this rotates against replaceable insert bearing pieces in the housing. No trueing-up of the steel shaft proper therefore becomes necessary after wear as the coating can be brought up to the required dimension by application of fresh anti-friction metal with appropriate trueing-up thereof. A crank-pin A of a crank-shaft has applied thereto a coating of anti-friction metal either in the form of a divided sleeve tinned on its undersurface for sweating to the crank-pin under heat and pressure or in the form of a strip helically wound around the crank-pin and similarly sweated thereto, or the coating may be electrodeposited or of sintered-powder form. The coating may have a wire mesh reinforcement. The divided big-end of the connecting- rod D has replaceable inserts E of hard material and half-cylinder form, which may have end flanges, placed in the two halves of the big-end, the upper insert having a pip H to enter a corresponding recess J in the big-end while the lower and unloaded insert has a lubricant slot G cut therein. The inserts may have raised and apertured rib-like portions to enter corresponding channels in the big-end parts, thereby providing lubrication passageways. A strip of rubber may be placed between the backs of the inserts and the housing.
