Abstract

560,273. Bearings. DAVY & UNITED ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., WATKINS, V., and MAYNE, J. S. Nov. 9, 1942, Nos. 15808 and 17882. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXVI] In a roll or shaft bearing escape of lubricant or coolant and ingress of grit &c. is prevented by a ring 34 pressed against a shoulder on the roll or shaft at one side of the bearing and at the other side by a slip ring 46 pressed axially against a ring 45 carried by the cover-plate 42. Rubber or steel springs 35, 48a provide the axial pressure and may be assisted by the liquid pressure in the bearing. The slip ring carries a shaft seal 49 and has a running clearance with the shaft. It may be of anti-friction metal or of steel with a white metal lining. In the case of water lubricated moulded fabric bearings, the rings 34, 48 and 45 and springs 35, 48a may be of hard rubber or synthetic rubber or of moulded fabric. Where grease lubricant is used, the rings are of phosphor bronze or gun metal and springs of hard rubber or steel. The bearings may be axially divided to facilitate assembly over the roller ends, the various packing rings and springs and slip ring being then formed in halves. The bearing at the opposite end of a roll is closed by a flat or domed plate. Specification 560,274 is referred to.
