Abstract

A material for purifying aqueous liquids is prepared by the calcination of double-hydrated dolomitic lime to the stage at which substantially all the magnesium hydroxide has been converted to magnesium oxide but no appreciable amount of the calcium hydroxide has been converted to calcium oxide. The material is prepared by treatment at a temperature between 300 and 700 DEG C. for at least ten minutes.ALSO:Silica and fluorides are removed from water and aqueous solutions by the addition of double-hydrated dolomitic lime which has been partly calcined, preferably to the stage at which substantially all the magnesium hydroxide has been converted to magnesium oxide but no appreciable amount of calcium hydroxide has been converted to calcium oxide. The sludge formed in the process when applied to softening water is allowed to accumulate and is agitated with the water and added treating material. The material is prepared by treatment at a temperature between 300 and 700 DEG C. for at least ten minutes.ALSO:In the purification of sugar juices normally treated with ordinary lime the substitution of a double-hydrated dolomitic lime which has been partly calcined assists in the removal of impurities simultaneously with the precipitation of the lime. The double hydrated dolomite is calcined to the stage where substantially all the magnesium hydroxide has been converted to magnesium oxide but none of the calcium hydroxide has been similarly converted.
