109,998. Spence, H., Llewellyn, W. B., and Spence & Sons, P. Oct. 2, 1916. Alkali sulphates.-Alunite or other alkali basic aluminium sulphate preferably after calcination to increase its solubility is treated with sulphurous acid solution. The solution is if necessary treated to adjust the proportion between SO3 and Al2O3 for instance by adding a basic substance such as lime in quantity sufficient to ensure that the solution contains not more than one molecule of SO, to one of Al2. or by removing some of the alumina and alkali sulphate as alum and is then heated to drive off the sulphurous acid. Basic aluminium sulphate separates. The alkali sulphate in the mother-liquor is then recovered.
