Abstract
A raw aluminium sulphate solution obtained from clay, bauxite, alunite, &c. has its pH value raised to a value of 0,1 to 0,8 units above the pH value of a chemically pure solution of the same concentration, impurities such as iron and titanium compounds are separated by hydrolysis under heat and removed together with silica, and the pH value then reduced by at least 1 unit, whereafter a crystallized compound containing aluminium sulphate is obtained and separated from the solution. The mother liquor being free from iron and titanium compounds may be returned to the process and used together with sulphuric acid for attacking more of the mineral. The pH value of the solution may be increased by adding oxides, hydroxides, silicates, aluminates, basic sulphates, or carbonates of aluminium, calcium, magnesium, sodium, or potassium, and decrease of its pH value be effected by saturating the solution with N2O3, N3O4, SO2, SO3, or HCl, whereby unstable addition compounds of aluminium sulphate with the added gases are obtained. The addition compounds may be decomposed by water or by heating to give pure aluminium sulphate. Specification 497,405, as open to inspection under Sect. 91, is referred to.
