Abstract

602,870. Alternating current commutator machines. ARNOT, A. E. R. Oct. 21, 1944, No. 20440. [Class 35] A commutator machine has a direct current field system and its armature is energized by a brush system rotated synchronously to produce an armature field, which is stationary with respect to the field system, this latter being excited from relatively stationary brushes which also engage the commutator. As shown for a machine having a stationary field system and a rotary armature, the rotatable brushes 21, 22, 23 are fed through slip-rings and driven by a synchronous motor 33. The field magnet 11 is energized from brushes 37, 38. The machine will run as a motor, or if driven will generate A.C. at a frequency depending on the speed of the motor 33 which may be separately energized. The Provisional Specification describes how the machine may have compound excitation by rectifying part of the A.C. load current and also states that the machine may have a stationary armature, the field magnet rotating. The machine may employ or produce single or polyphase current.
