Abstract
693,011. Synchronous A.C. machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and MAGGS. A. H. July 2, 1951 [Aug. 1, 1950], No. 19200/50. Class 35. The output voltage of a rotary armature synchronous machine of the type having an auxiliary commutated winding supplying D.C. field current, is kept constant by cutting away part of the armature core under the winding slots so that it is highly saturated at all load conditions. In the form shown, holes 7 are cut from the rotor laminµ leaving spokes 4 under the winding slots 6. This leaves the spokes 4 and the remaining rim 5 highly saturated. In a modification, the cut away portion is replaced by a non-magnetic spider mounted on the shaft. As shown in Fig. 3, the armature windings 11, 12, 13 and neutral point are connected through slip-rings to the three-phase mains, while the auxiliary D.C. armature winding 22 feeds the distributed field winding 25 from brushes 23, 24. The field winding may be in the form of a single phase winding or a three-phase winding as shown having two phases joined together to make a short-circuited path at right angles to the exciting axis. The brushes are shifted in the direction of rotation to utilise the armature reaction effect in stabilizing the output voltage in known manner.
