Abstract
602,729. Velocity-modulated tubes. BARFORD, N. C. March 2, 1944, No. 3950. [Class 39 (i)] Amplitude-modulation is imposed on a beam of electrons after it has been velocity-modulated, by means which is not only placed after the velocity-modulating means itself, but also after any stage which is coupled to that means ; undesired frequency modulation is thereby avoided. The amplitude modulating means may comprise a pair of plates 9 which deflect the beam across an apertured plate 10 to give variable cut-off and is placed, in the oscillator shown in Fig. 1, after the buncher resonator 4 and the catcher resonator 5 coupled to it and before the output resonator 6, and in the cascade amplifier shown in Fig. 2, after the input resonator 16 and before the intermediate resonator 17 and output resonator 18. The deflection may be performed magnetically and plate 10 may have a circular, triangular or other shaped aperture. Variable defocusing may be substituted for deflection. Electrode 11 may be a collector or may be biassed to reflect electrons back into resonator 6. In a simple amplifier, intermediate resonator 17 may be omitted.
