Abstract

A diolefin hydrocarbon is copolymerized in an aqueous medium in the presence of an emulsifying agent and an oxidizing agent with a saturated organic compound of the formula R-CH2-R1, where R and R1 are selected from the radicals -CN, -COOCnH2n+1 -COCH3, -Cl, and -C6H5, those specified being methylene dichloride, diethyl malonate, benzyl cyanide, ethyl cyano acetate, alkyl esters of aceto acetic acid and acetyl acetone. Dienes specified are 1 : 3-butadiene, isoprene, piperylene and dimethyl butadiene-1 : 3; other polymerizable substances may be present. As emulsifiers the sodium salt of sulphonated cetyl alcohol, sodium or an amine ricinoleate, oleate or stearate, and as catalyst, methyl tetrahydrofurane peroxide, a b -dimethyl dioxane peroxide a ,a ,b ,b -tetra dioxane peroxide may be used. The copolymers may be vulcanized by heating with sulphur, zinc oxide, carbon black, stearic acid, pine tar, tetra methyl thiuram di- or mono-sulphide.
