Abstract
A diene having the formula CH2=CR-CR=CHR, where R is hydrogen or methyl, is copolymerized with at least two components, each of which is an ester or nitrile of acrylic or methacrylic acid, each of the latter being at least 10 per cent by weight and the diene at least 50 per cent by weight of the total mixture. Dienes specified are butadiene, isoprene, dimethyl butadiene and piperylene, while esters and nitriles specified are methyl acrylate, methyl, and butyl methacrylates, acrylonitrile and methacrylonitrile. The process may be carried out by mass, solvent or emulsion methods using heat, light, pressure and catalysts as required. Catalysts specified are hydrogen peroxide, diazoaminobenzene, dipotassium diazomethane-disulphonate, benzoyl peroxide, potassium persulphate and styrene oxide, while sodium pyrophosphate, sodium oxalate, potassium fluoride, urea, glycine and alanine may be used as activators with hydrogen peroxide. In emulsion, aliphatic sulphates and sulphonates, aromatic sulphonic acids, salts of high molecular weight organic bases and partially neutralized myristic and palmitic acids may be used. Phenyl-b -naphthylamine may be added before coagulation by freezing and/or adding a salt, acid or alcohol. Pigments, fillers and softeners may be added to the products which may also be vulcanized by heating with carbon, sulphur, zinc oxide and stearic acid. The multipolymers are soluble in acetone and benzene.
