Abstract

A conjugated diolefin such as butadiene, isoprene, piperylene or dimethyl butadiene is copolymerized in aqueous emulsion with acrylonitrile or an alpha alkyl acrylonitrile, the overall proportion of the nitrile being less than 25 per cent, and 10-75 per cent of the nitrile being present in the initial reaction mixture, the remainder being added in increments during the polymerization. Methacrylonitrile is specified as an alkyl derivative. In the aqueous emulsion there may be alkali metal or ammonium oleate, palmitate, stearate or soaps from selectively hydrogenated tallow acids, sodium lauryl sulphate, salts of alkylated naphthalene and benzene sulphonic acids, dodecyl amine hydrochloride or acetate, catalysts such as hydrogen peroxide, alkali metal or ammonium perborates or persulphates and modifiers such as lauryl mercaptan. The mercaptans may be added portionwise. The copolymer may be vulcanized by heating with coal tar, wood rosin, ozokerite wax, carbon, zinc oxide, benzothiazyl disulphide, diphenyl guanidine and sulphur. U.S.A. Specification 1,973,000 is referred to.
