Abstract

A conjugated diene monomer is copolymerised with a non-aromatic ester of a mono- or dihalogenated ethylene : a : b -dicarboxylic acid. In an example, 1 : 3-butadiene is heated in a rotating autoclave with an emulsion comprising diethylchlormaleate, sodium laurylsulphate, a citric acid-phosphate buffer, sodium cyanide, acetaldehyde, sodium perborate and sulphuric acid. Phenylnaphthylamine is added to the resulting latex which is coagulated by addition of alcohol and the resulting rubber compounded with zinc oxide, sulphur, carbon black, stearic acid and benzothiazyl diethylsulphonamide. The esters may be prepared by removing hydrogenhalide by distillation or treatment with a mildly basic substance, e.g. sodium bicarbonate of di- or tri-halosuccinic esters. The latter may be made by halogenation of fumaric or maleic esters. Alcohols mentioned for esterification of the halogen (chlor- and brom-) fumaric and maleic acids are: methyl, propyl, butyl, amyl, cyclohexyl, benzyl, lauryl, furfuryl, tetrahydrofurfuryl, 2-ethylhexyl, 3 : 5-dimethylcyclohexyl, cyclopentyl, cyclohexylcarbinyl, bornyl, 2-chlorcyclohexylchlorethyl, chlorpropyl, chloramyl, fenchyl, ac-H4-betanaphthyl, crotonyl, 1-chlorallyl and dichlorisopropyl, alcohols. Glycols may also be used as well as hydroxy compounds containing the radicles C2H4OR, CH2COOR, C2H4COOR, CH(CH3)COOR,CH2COR, C2H4 COCH3 and CH(R)CH2COOR, where R is methyl, ethyl, butyl or benzyl. Mixed esters, e.g. ethylisobutylchlormaleate, may be used. Dienes mentioned are: isoprene, 2 : 3-dimethylbutadiene-1 : 3, 2-chlorbutadiene-1 : 3, 2-cyanobutadiene-1 : 3 and 2-cyano-3-methylbutadiene-1 : 3.
