Abstract

A homopolymer or copolymer of a pyridine derivative containing one or two vinyl groups, said copolymer containing at least 25 per cent by weight of the pyridine derivative is used in treating fabrics. Mono- and divinyl-pyridines substituted in the ring by an alkyl group or on the a -carbon of the vinyl group by a methyl group may be used and the total number of carbon atoms in the alkyl groups should not exceed 12. Specified compounds include 2-vinylpyridine; 2,5-divinylpyridine; 2-methyl-5-vinylpyridine; 2,3,4-trimethyl-5-vinylpyridine; 3,4,5,6-tetramethyl-2-vinylpyridine 3-ethyl-5-vinylpyridine; 2,6-diethyl-4-vinylpyridine; 2-isopropyl-4-nonyl-5-vinylpyridine; 2-methyl-5-undecyl-3-vinylpyridine; 3-dodecyl-4, 5-divinylpyridine; 2,4-dimethyl-5,6-dipentyl-3 - vinylpyridine; 2 - decyl - 5 - (a - methylvinyl)-pyridine and 3,5-di-(a -methylvinyl) pyridine. They may be copolymerized with conjugated diolefins such as 1 : 3-butadiene, isoprene, piperylene, 2,3-dimethyl-butadiene and other compounds containing a CH2=C<group. The polymer or copolymer may be formed by emulsion polymerization processes and the fabric treated with the latex so formed. Alternatively the fabric may be treated with an acid solution of the polymer, followed by treatment if desired with a solution of an alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or bicarbonate, or treated with a solution of the polymer in an organic solvent such as an alcohol, ketone, aldehyde, carbon tetrachloride or a hydrocarbon. Specified acids include formic, acetic, propionic, butyric, oxalic, malonic, maleic, succinic, glutaric, glycollic, chloracetic, di- and tri-chloracetic, hydrochloric, sulphuric and nitric acids.
