602,113. Instantaneous steam generators. SPLADIS, SOC. POUR L'APPLICATION D'INVENTIONS SCIENTIFIQUES. Aug. 14, 1945, No. 20939. Convention date, Oct. 6, 1944. [Class 123(ii)] A solid-fuel fired instantaneous steam boiler comprises a cylindrical shell 1 enclosing an annular air-supply conduit 11, 12 which terminates in a refractory lining 13 constituting a combustion chamber 9 above a fire-box 32, an adjustable ashremoving chain 5, and a passage 4, defined by a spiral water tube 3, therebetween, the space between the conduit 11, 12 and the shell 1 being normally filled with wood, coke, coal, etc., which gradually falls towards the passage 4, and the said conduit being lined with a helical water tube 16 and housing further tube coils, namely, water coils 18, 25, a steam coil 19, and a superheating coil 21. A water tube 28 is also fitted at the bottom of the conduit 11 and lining 13, and the latter is provided with air conduits 14 the lower ends of which are directed downwards and are laterally inclined so that the air issues therefrom with a whirling movement to sweep the crater 10 formed by the fuel above the passage 4. Water and air are supplied to the boiler by, e.g., a pump and blower respectively so that the quantities may be regulated according to the steam requirement, the air flowing through the conduit 11, 12 and conduits 14 and the water through a supply pipe 24 to the tubes 25, 3, 28, 16 and 18, in succession, and thence through the steam-generating tube 19 and superheater 21 to an outlet pipe 23. Preferably the pump and blower are controlled automatically by a manometric diaphragm, etc., which is subjected to the steam pressure within the outlet pipe 23 and acts through an electric rheostat to adjust a common variable-speed transmission for the said pump and blower. The boiler is ignited by a removable woodfired device 35 which is inserted through an opening 8 in the shell 1 and is provided with an air aperture 39 at its outer end and a flame-emitting extension 40 directed towards the passage 4 at the other end.
