Abstract

601,084. Fluid-actuated valves. PEET, A. Oct. 12, 1945, No. 26793. [Class 135] [Also in Group XIII] - In a gas-fired water heater having a self-closing gas valve 26 opened automatically by a pressure-responsive member 6 when water flows through the heater pipe 9, the gas valve casing 30 has two opposite inlet passages 30a, 30b, either of which may be sealed off with a closing plate 24, whilst the other of the inlet passages is connected to the outlet of the main gas tap 21 so that the latter may be located on either side of the casing 30. The heater pipe 9 is connected to a hot water conduit 15 having end connections 15a, 15b disposed on opposite sides of the casing 30, one of these connections being closed by a sealing element 15c and the other being connected to a hot water outlet tap 17 so that the latter may be located on either side of the casing 30 and on the opposite side to the gas tap 21. The tap 17 communicates with an outlet branch 17b to which is detachably coupled an outlet spout 18. A second outlet branch 33 connected to the hot water conduit 15 is closed by a sealing element (not shown) when the heater is used to supply a bath, sink, wash basin or the like. When, however, the heater delivers to a multipoint hot water system, the spout 18 is detached and the branch 17b closed by a sealing element whilst the branch 33 which communicates directly with the conduit 15 and the heater pipe 9 by aT-piece 14, 14a is connected to the multi-point system. Alternatively, the complete water tap 17 may be detached and the other end connection 15a or 15b closed by a sealing plug. The main gas tap 21 may be operated through link or other mechanism by a centrally disposed control handle rotatably mounted on the casing 30, for example on a cover 28 holding the gas valve spring 27 in place. The pressure-responsive member 6 which may be either a piston or a diaphragm operates the gas valve 26 through a plunger 26a, and is located in a casing 13 bolted to the casing 30. The opposite sides 7, 7a of the diaphragm 6 are respectively connected to the water supply passage 3 and the throat of a venturi section 5, Fig. 6, mounted in the casing 13 between the passage 3 and the heater pipe 9. The latter connection is controlled by a hollow ported screwed plug 8 containing a ball valve 34 to check any sudden rush of water from the chamber 7a when the plug is closed on the seat 12c. A pipe 31 leads from the main gas tap,21 to a pilot jet adjacent the main burner 29.
