Abstract
594,357. Feedwater heating systems. CAIRD & RAYNER, Ltd., and REDDICK, R. F. Feb. 16, 1945, No. 3966. [Class 64 (i)] [Also in Group XXIX] A steam-heated boiler feedwater heater 16, Fig. 1, is provided with means whereby the water is by-passed through a pipe 25 in the event of a leak developing in any of the heater tubes 30. A valve 1 in the inlet 4 to the heater is connected to a piston 2a having a small orifice 3 whereby the pressure on either side of the piston is equalised, so that the valve is opened by the pressure of incoming water. A pipe 6 connects a chamber 5 below the piston with a floatoperated valve 17 which normally closes the pipe 6 but which connects it with a vent 19 on the accumulation of water in a chamber 15 connected to the steam side of the heater. When the pipe 6 is thus vented, the pressure below the piston 2a falls and the valve 1 closes, whereupon the water flows through the by-pass 25, opening a spring- loaded valve 27 and closing a non-return valve 23 in the heater outlet. The pipe 6 may also be vented by a hand-operated valve 22. In order to prevent the valve 1 from reopening when the water in the chamber 15 is dispersed, a differential piston valve 8, Fig. 2, is connected at 7 to the pipe 6 and at 11 to the inlet 4 of the heater, so that upon the. reduction of pressure in the pipe 6 when this is vented, the piston 9 is moved to the left by the pressure in the pipe 11 to place the pipe 7 in communication with a vent 13 until the piston is reset by a screwed spindle 29.
