Abstract
600,923. Ball joints. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Nov. 21, 1944, No. 23120. Convention date, July 22. [Class 65 (ii)] The ball of a stud member of a ball-andsocket joint is retained in a housing by a pair of radially loaded bushing members each of which is provided with a plurality of relatively movable bearing sections of relatively hard material. The ball 3, Figs. 1 and 2, is mounted in the socket 1 by means of a pair of radially loaded resilient bushing 7 to which are attached three or more bearing plates 5, so that if wear occurs mainly in one plane, there will always be at least one wear take-up space 6 not in that plane. During assembly, the resilient bushings 7 are placed under radial load so that any wear on the bearing plates 5 is automatically taken up. The plates 5 may be made of any suitable material such as a metal, a hard-moulded plastic, or synthetic condensation product or hard rubber and may be bonded or otherwise secured to the surface of the bushing. In a modification, the plates 5 are formed by hardening the surface 10 of the bushings 7 which are then slotted to form the wear takeup spaces 6.
