[Class 97 (i)] In a frame including two lens-supporting members, rims or straps, and a bridgepiece, each lens supporting member and the appropriate part of the bridge are united by means of an openended box with a hole in the side into which a lug on the lenssupporting member fits, at least one of the other members of the frame having an end shaped to fit into the box and the whole being clamped by a screw acting longitudinally of the box. Each box may also secure the end of a side-supporting wire. As shown, the box 3 carried on the bridge 1 has an aperture 4 into which a lug 9 on the lens strap 8 or lugs 14, 15 on a split lens rim 13 are inserted. A sidesupporting wire 5 has an end 7 fitting into the top of the box and a screw 11 passing through holes in the lug 9 or lugs 14, 15 engages a hole in the end 7 to clamp the members together. Alternatively, the box 3 may be carried by the wire 5 and the bridge 1 have a shaped end, or both bridge and wire may have ends shaped to lie side by side in the end of the box and be held by a separate screw. Alternatively, the side wires may be attached directly to the lens rim or may be omitted in rimless spectacles.
