Abstract
792,681. Spectacle frames. AMERICAN OPTICAL CO. Sept. 14, 1955 [Jan. 17, 1955], No. 26334/55. Class 97(1) In a frame in which the underside of the upper rim portion is grooved to receive the correspondingly bevelled edge of the lens and eyewires encircle the lower peripheries of the lenses, the eyewires are resiliently extensible or connected through a spring member to the frame so that a lens can be fitted or removed without detaching or loosening their ends. A bar-like member is attached to each rim portion and can carry a detachable decorative trim. As shown, trim 38 is tubular and resiliently grips bar-like member 28. It may be made from two differently coloured semi-cylindrical pieces of material. Eyewires either enter grooves in the edges of the lenses or are grooved to fit the bevelled edges of the lenses. Bar-like member 28 of spring steel or copper-beryllium alloy has a resilient end portion 29 of reduced thickness which can be bent to relieve the tension in eyewire 32, attached to it at 33, so that the lens can be removed or inserted. The temples are carried by end pieces 24 soldered to rim portion 20. The members 28 are soldered to the rim portion 20 and provide channels 37 to receive the edges of the tubular trims 38. When in place on member 28 the trims 38 prevent portions 29 from being bent to remove the lenses. In another form the member is in the form of a flexible cable 28a extending nearly throughout its whole length and is provided with a solid end section having a shortened resilient portion 29. Rim portion 20 together with member 28 may thus be more easily bent to the curvature of a lens. The resilient extension of the eyewire may be by means of a spring loop 46 (Fig. 11) connected to the bar-like member or the whole (Fig. 12) on the end part or parts (Fig. 14. not shown), of the eyewire may be constructed as a helical spring 52 having its ends attached to the rim portion.
