Abstract

599,988. Centrifugal pumps. THOMPSON PRODUCTS, Inc. Sept. 27, 1945, No. 25054. Convention date, Jan. 5, 1944. [Class 110 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a fuel supply system the fuel pump 26 is detachably mounted in a small auxiliary tank 13 inside the main fuel tank 10, inlets 41, 42 being open during operation, but adapted to be closed by flap valves 44, 45 to cut off the fuel from the interior of the auxiliary tank when it is desired to remove the pump, thereby avoiding the necessity of draining the main tank. The valves 44, 45 are operated from outside the tank by screws 50, 59 attached to rods 49, 57 carrying collars 53, 58 which engage bifurcated arms 48, 56, Fig. 2, attached to the valves which are spring-closed by springs 54, 60. A vent hole 43 for vapour beaten from the fuel during pumping by a beater 25 is provided with a similar spring-closed valve 62 controlled simultaneously with valve 44 by an extension of the rod 49. Alternatively, it may be controlled separately. The pump, driven by an electric motor 26, comprises an impeller 23 in a volute chamber 20 from which the fuel is forced along conduits 21, 29 in the casing 16 to the fuel supply line and the engine. A screen 28 extends between the casing 16 and motor 26. The, pump, attached to the flanged plate 36, is inserted through an opening 35 in the main tank wall 10 and a smaller concentric opening 34 in the flanged base-plate 12 of the auxiliary tank, being fixed in position by the screws 37. Plate 19 forming one wall of the volute chamber 20 is secured to the plate 36 by screws 40 to provide access to the impeller 23 without removing the whole pump. The member 33 forming the lower part of conduit 29 is secured to the casing 16 and plate 36 by a screw 31. Washers 55, 61 ensure tight closure of the valves 44, 45 and sealing washers 38, 39 may be interposed between the bottom of the auxiliary tank and the main tank.
