Abstract
976,638. Centrifugal pumps. JOSEPH LUCAS (INDUSTRIES) Ltd. Aug. 16, 1962 [Aug. 31, 1961], No. 31329/61. Heading F1C. A motor driven submersible pump comprises a housing defining a substantially cylindrical chamber in which the motor and pump rotor are coaxially accommodated, the housing having an open end pivoted with a peripheral flange for mounting the housing within a hole in a tank or other container, at least one inlet in the housing adjacent the flange, a closure member detachable from the open end of the casing by relative angular movement, a sleeve within the housing and angularly movable with the closure member and having an aperture or apertures in register with the inlet or inlets when the closure member is correctly engaged with the housing but removed from the inlet or inlets when the closure member is moved angularly to a position in which it can be detached so as to cause the sleeve to seal the inlet or inlets, and means for retaining the closure member from angular movement when in the correctly engaged position and for retaining the sleeve from angular movement when the closure member is detached. A cylindrical housing 1 has an eccentric peripheral flange 2 by which it is bolted around a circular hole in the bottom of an aircraft fuel tank. The pump body 3, together with the pump impeller 4 and the driving motor 5, is inserted into the housing 1, with cylindrical sleeves 15, 19 interposed, and held in place by a closure plate 11 which is pivotally mounted on a boss 12 formed on the pump body. Lugs 13 on the housing 1 overlap the closure plate 11 to hold the assembly in place, rotation of the closure plate being prevented by a spring-loaded plunger 18 which engages a notch 11 b in the edge of the closure plate. Extensions 17 on the sleeve 15 engage recesses 14 in the edge of the closure plate 11, whereby the sleeve is held in the angular position in which ports 16 in the sleeve align with inlet ports 8 in the housing 1 to permit flow of fuel towards the impeller 4. The impeller 4 discharges to a volute 10 formed in the housing 1. For removal of the pump body 3, impeller 4 and motor 5, the plunger 18 is depressed manually to permit the closure plate 11 to be turned into a position in which the recesses 14 align with the lugs 13. In this position of the closure plate 11, the sleeve 15 is in the position in which it obturates the ports 8 to prevent fuel from flowing from the tank to the housing 1, and the plunger 18 engages a recess 17a in one of the extensions 17 to hold the sleeve in this position. The closure plate 1, pump body 3, impeller 4 and motor 5 can now be withdrawn. At the same time, the sleeve 19, which is spring-loaded, moves downwards into a position in which it covers the ports 16 as an additional safeguard.
