JAMES EDWARD BALDWIN, 01' HEHPB'JPEID, NEW YORK.
stmnaasmm: rm.
Application fled January 7, 1921. Serial mi. 485,620. Renewed 1111117, 1926.
This invention relates to power pumps of the submersible type.
In devices of this character the power is usually furnished b an. electric motor directly connected wit the pump, which ordinarily is of the centrifugal type, the impeller of the pump in such cases being mounted on an extension of the motor shaft. A considerable difficulty heretofore experienced with pumps of this character arises from water working along the pump shaft intothe motor compartment, this despite the fact that a gland or stuffing box is usually provided at the motor side of the pump. Attempts have been made to overcome this difiiculty by lengthening the motor shaft, by mounting the motor in a diving bell chamher and the like, but all these expedients have resulted in bulky and cumbersome constructions which are effective only when the pump structure is supported in an upright position.
My invention aims to overcome the above objections and to provide a relatively simple and compact structurein which leakage into the motor compartment will be efiectually prevented.
In the accompanying drawings I have illustrated a practical and for the present a preferred embodiment of the invention, but wish it understood that changes and modifications 'may be resorted to without departure from the true spirit of the invention, as will be apparent from the scope of the appended claims.
Figure 1 in the drawings referred to is a longitudinal section and part side elevation view of the complete pump unit.
Figure 2 is an enlarged cross sectional view of the same as taken on substantially the plane of line 2-2 of Figure 1.
The pump section of the apparatus comprises a pump casing 5 having an axial inlet 6 and an out et (the latter not shown) and an impeller 7 rotating within the caslng.
The motor section of the apparatus comprises an electric motor indicated generally at 8 and enclosed within a water-tight cas- Tn my invention there is interposed between the motor casing and the pum casing, a compartment or chamber 10 and t e motor shaft 11 extends from the motor compartment through this intermediate chamber to the pump casing, where it serves as the support for the impeller.
'Within the intermediate chamber 10 and surroundm the combination motor and pum sha t there is a pump packing or glan 12 connected with the journal extension 13 of the pump casing and a second packing or gland 14 connected with an extenslon 15 of a (part of the motor bearing. The interme iate compartment 10 serves in effect as a collection chamber for any water or oil leaking past the pump packing and the additional packing at the motor side of the collection chamber prevents leakage along the shaft from the collection chamber into the motor chamber. a
To give access to these packings for the purpose of adJustment, renewal or inspection, I have shown the collection chamber as haying a door or hand hole cover 16 in one side thereof which is made water-tight as by means of a suitable gasket 17' and clamp screws 18. This cover is shown as hinged at its lower end at 19 and the bottom of the chamber is shown as substantially horizontal so as to drain itself when the door is swung open.
In practice, the collection chamber may be and preferably is formed as an extension .of the shell or casing of the motor and the pump casing is bolted to the open end of such extension so as to form an end cover therefor.
The invention, it will be seen, is entirely practical andwholly overcomes the objections notedabove. The packings between the collection chamber and ump unit and between the collection cham er and motor unit are, it will be observed, individually adjustable to take up for wear and to prevent leakage at either of these oints and such adjustments are made easi y possible by the ready accessibility afforded by the wide-opening cover at the side of the chamber. With the construction disclosed the pump can be operated as well horizontally or vertically or in any intermediate position.
What I claim is:
1. A submersible pump of the character described having a motor com artment and a pump casing 1n longitudina alinement, a.
collection chamber located between the compartment and the casing, closed walls separating the chamber from the compartment and the casing, a packing mounted on each wall, a shaft extending through the pack ings, the collection chamber having a drainv the packings, and a water-tight closure for age opening leading therefrom, and a manually-operated closure for closing said opening and rendering the chamber completely closed before the ump is submerged.
2. A submersib e pump of the character described having a motor compartment and a pump casin in lonlgitudinal alinement, a collection 0 amber ocated between the compartment and the casing, closed walls separating the chamber from the compartment and the casing, a packing mounted on, each wall, a shaft extending through the )ackings, said chamber having an'aperture eading from said chamber for draining liquids from the chamber and for access to closing sald aperture, thereb the chamber completely close pump is submerged.
3. In a pump of the character described having a motor compartment, a collection rendering before the chamber and a um casing in longitudinal alignment, sai co ection chamber being formed by integral cup shaped extensions on the respective motor compartment and the pump casin means for fixedly securing the termina ends of said extensions in mating relation, a motor within the motor compartment and provided with a shaft extendi from said com artment through the collection chamber and into the pump casing, a pump element on said shaft within the pump casing, adjustable packings on the motor shaft within the collection chamber between said chamber and the motor compartment and said chamber and the pump casing, one side of the collection chamber having an opening therein for the full height :thereof and a water tight clo sure for said opening.
In testimon whereof I afiix m si JAM S EDWARD BAiD ature.
