Abstract

599,745. Measuring forces. SCHLESINGER, G. June 20, 1945, No. 15719. [Class 106 (ii)] A device for use in measuring solely the tangential cutting pressure exerted on a metal cutting tool, comprises a support 6, 6<1> having a spherical surface 2 forming a mount for a tool holder 1 which reacts against the free end of a resilient cantilever 8 which is anchored at its root end between spaced bearing blocks 12 and 13 carried by the support 6 and wherein also the holder 1 is restrained against movement in the direction of feed by a strut which extends, in a direction normal to the tangential cutting pressure, between the holder and the support 6, the holder being resiliently urged to engage the cantilever and strut. As shown in Fig. 1, the tool holder 1 is mounted on the ball 2 in a rigid support 6 clamped to a machine. The machine tool is placed in a recess 3 in the holder 1 and is clamped therein by two screws 4 and 5. The holder 1 is spring-urged into engagement with a horizontal ball-ended strut 15, not shown, which takes up the " feed force," the ball 2 taking the shank force. The tangential force on the tool A causes the tool holder 1 to move downwardly against the action of a cantilever spring plate 8 which at its forward end has a knife edge 10 bearing against a plate 14 on. the holder 1 and at its back end is fixed as shown between two bearing blocks 12 and 13. The back end of the cantilever plate 8 is of such a strength as to resist any change in position or length due to the tangential force which causes therefore deflection only of the forward end of this plate 8. A stop 21 is provided on the support 6 to limit the deflection of the plate 8. The tool holder 1 has secured to it an armature 23 of an electromagnet 24 so that movement of the holder varies the gap between the armature 23 and the electromagnet 24 which changes can be used to effect meter readings, point readings or graphic records.
