Abstract

564,074. Diamond polishing apparatus, DEUTSCH, J. April 9, 1943, No. 5685. [Class 60] Apparatus for grinding or polishing diamonds comprises a split chuck which is formed with a cavity of adjustable depth and is carried in a sleeve arranged to be mounted in a number of angular positions in a head adjustable about two axes at right angles on a cantilever arm. The diamond is gripped by the resilient jaws 2, Fig. 7, formed in a member 7 and operated by an internally-coned nut 5, the base of the cavity between the jaws being formed by the head 9 of a screw 8. The member 7 is mounted in a sleeve 10, Fig. 4, by a set-screw 11 and the sleeve is carried in a recess in the head 14 by a screw 17 having a conical point 18 which engages one of a number of grooves 19 in the sleeve. The diamond is further secured by a pair of jaws 20 pivoted in the head at 22 and operated by a right- and left-handed screw 27, the longitudinal motion of which is prevented by a pin 30 engaging a groove therein. The head is pivoted at 33 to a plate 35 at an inclination determined by screws 36, 38. The plate is pivotally mounted on a second plate 42, setscrews being provided to fix its angular position, and the plate 42 is secured to a spindle 45 fixed in the arm 15, Fig. 1. The main part 50 of the latter is formed with an inclined surface 54 adjustably engaging a complementary surface 55 on a pedestal, and has an extension 61 engaging a post 62, the other end of the arm engaging a post 60 to prevent lateral movement of the 'arm. A sleeve 63 with an adjustable upper part 64 surrounds the post 60 and acts as a downward stop for the arm.
