Abstract

599,566. Expanding wheel gearing. RONAI, E. Sept. 18, 1945, No. 24125. Convention date, Aug. 30, 1944. [Class 80(ii)] In an expanding wheel gear, the transmission means consists of an inner ring, contacting the bevel members, and an outer ring rotatably mounted on the inner ring and arranged to be driven by the inner ring when the latter is deformed by taking the load. Parallel input and output shafts 22, 33 carry on their splined portions 23, 34, the cones 18, 19, 20, 21 of two expanding wheels. Drive between the wheels is transmitted by a rigid ring 5 having bevelled edges 6 and an annular flange on its periphery. A second ring 11 is mounted on the ring 5, and secured thereon by a grub-screw secured collar in such a manner that deformation of the ring 5 in transmitting the drive causes the ring 11 to rotate rigidly with the ring 5. On cessation of the drive, the ring 5 is no longer deformed and the ring 11 is free to revolve on the ring 5 to dissipate its kinetic energy. Lateral adjustment of the cone members 19, 21 is effected by a rack and pinion mechanism 27, 28 on the housing 25 of the bearing 24 for the cone member 19, and by torsion spring adjusted spindle 45 and the slide blocks 42 to a housing 36 for a thrust bearing 35 of the cone member 21.
