Abstract

551,490. Differential gearing; driving propellers. BOWER, G. S., and DAY, B. I. Aug. 22, 1941, No. 10755. [Class 80 (ii)] Consists in gearing for driving two coaxial, e.g. propeller, shafts in opposite directions from two power units in such manner that the driving and reaction torques are all balanced. The rear ends of the shafts 10, 11, are formed as carriers 12, 13 for planet wheels 14, 15 which mesh with annuli 19, 20 and with sun wheels 17, 18 formed integrally with a sleeve 16 which is rotatable on the shaft 11. The annulus 19 has teeth 21 to mesh with a gear wheel driven by one crankshaft and the other annulus teeth 22 driven by the other crankshaft of the engine, the annuli being rotated in opposite directions. The sun wheels act as the reaction elements for their respective trains and balance the torque reactions of the two trains against one another. The gearing may be modified (1) by securing the sun wheels 17, 18 on the shafts 10, 11 and replacing the planet carriers by a common carrier carrying both sets of planets ; (2) by coupling the annuli 19, 20 together and re-arranging the sun wheels and planet carriers to act as the driving and driven members of the gearing.
