Abstract
596,782. Heating liquids by passage of current. HUGHES, C. L. (Drabble, D. S., Drabble, E. J., and Zarate, P. O. de.). July 27, 1944, No. 14351. [Class 39 (iii)] In an electric water heater, the length of current path and hence the temperature of the water are adjusted by rotating electrode plates 11, carried by an inner tubular member 4, relative to fixed electrode plates 3 secured to an outer tubular casing 1. Water enters through an inlet 22, is heated in the annular space between the tubular members, and then flows through openings 8, 9 into the interior of the member 4 whence it is discharged through a shower cone 17. An outlet duct 20 ensures that the heater is drained and the current thus cut off when the supply of water is stopped. The inner tubular member is rotated by means of a handle 21, movement being limited by a stop 24 sliding in a channel 23. A coiled spring 15 maintains electrical connection between a contact stud 13 and a contact plate 10 bridging the metal or carbon electrode plates 11.
