[Class 46] A steeping-press for use in the manufacture of viscose has two outlets, one for the caustic soda draining after steeping and the other for the caustic soda resulting from pressing, each outlet being provided with a closure one of which at least can be manually operated, and the piston of the press is operatively connected to a closureactuating member so that as the piston moves one at least of the closure members is acted upon to produce the successive discharge of the drainage soda and the soda resulting from pressing. In the arrangement shown, a vat 1 is provided with a piston to which is fixed a rod 4 carrying a roller 5. The roller bears on a lever in two parts 9, 10 adjustably connected together, the part 10 being provided with two ramps 16, 17. The part 9 is connected by a rod 35 to a plug 33 closing an outlet 29 in a tank 19. The tank is also provided with an outlet 28 with a plug 30 which can be raised manually. The liquid from the vat 1 flows into the tank 19 through an opening 20 and flows over a partition 23 to a pipe 25 communicating with the outlet 28. In operation, the plug 30 is raised after the cellulose sheets have been steeped, so that the drainage soda is discharged. The piston in the vat is then operated and when the roller 5 engages the ramp 16 the plug 33 is raised allowing discharge of the soda through outlet 29. When the roller 5 engages the ramp 17 the plug 33 closes this outlet, and further drainge soda, if any, escapes through outlet 28. In a modification, the piston carries a horizontal rod provided with two pairs of detents whereby valves controlling the discharge of soda from two outlets are actuated.
