Abstract
235,872. Pr³ss, M. June 19, 1924, [Convention date]. Gravity-separation apparatus; plant. - A settling basin and sludge-digestion chamber are arranged side bv side or one above the other, the two having no direct communication for liquid but the separating walls being thin and of heatpermeable material such as copper, so that the digestion chamber is heated by sewage flowing through the settling-basin. Sludge collects in a narrow channel 3 at the bottom of the settling-basin 1, the channel being preferably deeper a.t the inlet end of the basin, and is passed siphonically to a gutter 11 through a pipe 4 suspended from a truck 5 which moves longitudinally over the basin. The pipe 4 has a suction orifice, opening to the front, at the lower end, and behind it is a baffle 6 the edges of which sweep over the sides and bottom of the channel. The channel 3 may communicate with the rest of the basin through a narrow slot wide enough only for the passage of the pipe 4. The sludge in the gutter 11 may be tested, thickened or mixed with digested sludge, and sludge which it is not desirable to pass to the digestion chamber 2 can be discharged from the gutter. The chamber 2, Fig. 1, is provided with partitions 14. Digested sludge is discharged by a pipe 12 to a gutter 13. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 4 the digestion chamber 2 extends above the liquid level in the settling basins 1. A pump 16 lifts the sludge through the pipes 4 to the gutter 11. The chamber 2 may be divided by transverse partitions into compartments communicating through slides 15. Sewage may be passed through a closed channel 17 to heat the chamber 2.
