To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, AUGUST Datum, a subject of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croates, and Slovenes, residing at- Vancouver Island,
in the Province of British Columbia and provide a pulp saver having novel means whereby the heavy solid materials such as particles may be separated from the pulp or cellulose contained in the liquid discharged from the blow pits.
A further object of the invention is to provide a pulp saver which operates with a minimum of attendant labor and which requires-but a small amount of power.
The invention forming the subject matter of this application aims also to provide a pulp saver which is simple to operate, efficient in use and cheap to. manufacture.
Other objects and advantages of'the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.

In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 generally designates the improved pfulp saver having a trough 112 which receives the liquid discharged from the blow pits or blow tanks further object of the invention is to of the mill. As illustrated in Figure 1, the trough 12 discharges the liquid which bears a quantity of pulp into a series of sediment collecting tanks 14: having downwardly extending bailies 16 which collect the scum in the liquid and prevent the ing over the partitions 18. Sliding screens 24 may also lie detachably extended over the opening 20.
' Upon leaving the sediment collecting compartments 14 the liquid passes over the partitions 18: which terminate below the upper sides of the tank and enters a plurality of pulp receiving compartments 26. Before "discharging, sliding gates are opened and waste liquor drained oil through the screens, compartments are then partly filled with water in order to obtain a proper dilution of settled pulp which'is then washed out and pumped to the pulp storage.
As illustrated in Figure 5, a transversely extending and transversely inclined bafie 28 is extended across each compartment above each partition 18 and serves to direct the inflowing liquid downwardly in the direction of the bottom walls ofthe pulp collecting compartments 26. In' thus directing the liquid downwardly upon entering the com partments the buoyancy of the pulp contained in the liquid is overcome so that the pulp will immediately begin to settle and will not fioat upon the liquid. As the liquid flows through the tanks 26- the same approaches a transversely extending partition 30 which terminates below the top of the tanks'26 and serves to provide the tanks 26 from a discharge utter 32. .After depositing the pulp in t e several compartments 26, the liquid enters the compartments or gutters 32 and passes off through openings 36. Any solid matter which may enter the gutters 32 is retained therein by means of screens 38. Sliding gates 40 are employed for closing the discharge passages 36 when desired.
The pulp deposited in the several tanks 26 may be periodically discharged through a pipe 42 having a plurality of branches 44 scum from passice extending into the several compartments 26. The branch pipes 44 are provided with covers 46 which may be simultaneously opened by means of 0 erating members 48.
In the practice of the invention, the improved pulp saver will effect a saving of between 3 and 3%70 of the daily pulp production of the mill. As the depth of the pulp deposited in the compartments 26 increases the velocity of the liquid increases proportionately. A centrifugal pump may be connected to the pipe 42 when it is desired to draw oil the sediment or pulp collected in the several compartments 26.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A pulp saver comprising a tank having inlet means, a partition arranged within the tank and dividing the same into sediment and pulp receiving compartments, and a transversely inclined baflie arranged in said pulp collecting compartment adjacent said partition and adapted for directing the inflowing liquid downwardly.
2. A pulp saver comprisin a tank, a partition arranged therein there y dividing the same into sediment collecting and pulp collecting compartments, a transversely inclined baflle secured above said partition and t ,aaarae adapted for directing the infiowing liquid downwardly, a second partition arranged in said tank and forming a discharge gutter, said first and second namedipartitions terminating below the top of said tank.
3. A pulp saver comprising a tank having an inlet spout, a partition arranged within the tank and dividing the same into sediment and pulp collecting compartments, discharge means for said sediment collecting compartment, a baffie traversing said sediment collecting compartment in spaced relation to said partition and terminating below the upper side of the tank, a second bafile traversing said pulp collecting compartment and being inclined transversely for directing the inflowing liquid downwardly whereby the buoyancy of the pulp contained in the liquid is overcome, discharge means connected to said pulp collecting compartment, and a second partition arranged in said tank and formingv a discharge utter.
