Abstract

594,061. Catamenial tampons. SMITH & NEPHEW, Ltd., T. J., and COULSON, E. June 27, 1945, No. 16404. [Class 81 (ii)] A catamenial tampon made up of a covered adsorbent pad, is characterized by the fact that before compression the pad has one end turned to lie level on the other end, the double thickness being stitched across adjacent the said ends, the whole then being turned inside out to bring the ends to the interior, a withdrawal cord or tape being attached at any period of the manufacture before compression. As shown in Fig. 10, a looped cord 28 is laid on a covered pad 27 with one side of the loop projecting over one end of the pad. The pad is thus doubled across a central vertical line to enclose the free ends of the cord and stitched across the loop parallel to the ends of the pad at 35, Fig. 15, and the whole turned inside out and then compressed. Alternatively, the cord may be laid on the pad in U-shape with the base of the U projecting beyond one end of the pad ; after reversal, the cord is knotted adjacent the stitched seam. In another modification, a single or doubled tape may be used. The covered pad may be made of an absorbent cotton wool or cellulose pad 20 inserted in a reversed gauze or stockinette covering 25; Fig. 9. This covering may be made from open woven material in the form of alternate tubular portions connected by single thickness portions 26, by cutting longitudinally in the single thickness portion and turning the resultant tube inside out. Specifications 520,209 and 543,158 are referred to.
