425,088. Catamenial appliances. RABELL, (nÚe JOHNSTON), M. E., 11, Bon Mar Road, Pelham Manor, New York, U.S.A. Aug. 8, 1934, No. 22939. Convention date, Aug. 9, 1933. [Class 81 (ii)] A menstrual tampon comprises a flexible diaphragm and a mass of absorbent material secured to one or both of its sides. The diaphragm 1, Fig. 2, is composed of cotton or other fibres woven together, and it has sufficient stiffness to extend across the vaginal passage when inserted. The absorbent mass 3, Fig. 1, may be formed of strands of soft material which are drawn through the mesh of the diaphragm or are stuck to it by an adhesive such as rubber cement. The material is trimmed or formed to the shape of a sphere. Masses of cotton batting may be used, and may be secured to the diaphragm by adhesive, by tying, or by sewing, and the assembly may be enclosed in a permeable cover such as cotton gauze fabric. In another construction, strands of soft cotton fibres may be drawn through a central hole in the diaphragm and allowed to spread out to the shape of a sphere. A cord 15, preferably attached to the edge of the diaphragm is provided for withdrawing the tampon.
