Abstract
Lubricating oil and grease compositions particularly for use in the presence of moisture, such as turbine oils, contain a small proportion of an anti-corrosion agent comprising an alkyl mercapto derivative of a saturated aliphatic dibasic acid. Monalkyl mercapto and dialkyl mercapto derivatives may be used, particularly derivatives in which at least one of the alkyl groups contains at least 8 carbon atoms such as octyl, decyl, dodecyl, and cetyl. Derivatives of succinic acid are preferred and the cetyl compounds specified, viz., mono-cetyl mercapto succinic acid and di-cetyl mercapto succinic acid. In use the compound may be neutralized with an amino base or may be used in the form of the anhydride or the half ester with common alcohols. The mono-alkyl mercapto succinic acids are prepared by the direct condensation of the mercaptan with maleic anhydride in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst such as boron fluoride, aluminium chloride &c. followed by hydration. The dialkyl mercapto succinic acids may be prepared by first converting maleic anhydride to its mono-chlor derivative and then reacting this compound with two mols of the mercaptan to give the desired anhydride which is finally hydrated. The second mol of mercaptan may be condensed in the form of an alkali mercaptide. U.S.A. Specification 2,354,500 is referred to.ALSO:Mono-alkyl mercapto succinic acids are prepared by the direct condensation of the mercaptan with maleic anhydride in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst such as boron fluoride, aluminium chloride, &c., followed by hydration. Di-alkyl mercapto succinic acids are prepared by first converting maleic anhydride to its mono-chlor derivative and then reacting this compound with two mols. of the mercaptan to give the desired anhydride which is finally hydrated. The second mol. of mercaptan may be condensed in the form of an alkali mercaptide.
