Abstract
An extreme pressure lubricant comprises (1) a liquid copolymeric siloxane having a degree of substitution of greater than 2 and less than 3 organic radicles per silicon atom, at least 37 per cent. of these organic radicles being methyl radicles, sufficient of these organic radicles being halogenated aryl radicles for the ratio of halogen atoms to silicon atoms in the siloxane to be 0.05-5, and the remainder if any, of these organic radicles being phenyl radicles, the halogenated aryl radicles being chosen from halogenated phenyl radicles and halogenated xenyl radicles wherein the halogen is chosen from chlorine and bromine, there being 1-7 atoms of halogen substituted on each of these halogenated aryl radicles and (2) 0.01-5 per cent. by weight calculated on (1) of a metal chosen from copper, magnesium and lead, this metal being present in the form of a salt of an acid chosen from aliphatic carboxylic acids having 4-9 carbon atoms in the molecule and cyclohexyl derivatives of such aliphatic acids. Examples of such acids are butyric, nonylic, caproic, 2-ethyl-hexanoic, cyclohexylnonylic, cyclohexylbutyric, cyclohexyl caproic and cyclohexylvaleric acids. The lubricant may also contain anti-corrosion agents, anti-oxidants and natural solvents for ingredients (1) and (2). Suitable mutual solvents are the aliphatic carboxylic acids mentioned under (2) above. The lubricants may also be compounded with fillers such as the alkali metal salts or alkaline earth metal salts of fatty acids in order to produce greases. In the examples, ingredient (1) is either a chlorinated arylsiloxane copolymer having a composition of 6 mol per cent. of Cl2C6H3SiO 3/2 , 5 mol per cent. of C6H5CH3SiO, 14 mol per cent. of (CH3)3SiO 1/2 and 75 mol per cent. of (CH3)2SiO or the corresponding brominated arylsiloxane copolymer. Ingredient (2) is copper, lead or magnesium 2-ethyl hexoate, copper cyclohexyl caproate or copper butyrate and, except in the case of magnesium 2-ethyl hexoate, the corresponding free acid is added as mutual solvent. Specifications 667,179 and 688,166 are referred to.ALSO:An extreme pressure lubricant comprises (1) a liquid copolymeric siloxane having a degree of substitution of greater than 2 and less than 3 organic radicles per silicon atom, at least 37 per cent. of these organic radicles being methyl radicles, sufficient of these organic radicles being halogenated aryl radicles for the ratio of halogen atoms to silicon atoms in the siloxane to be 0.05-5, and the remainder, if any, of these organic radicles being phenyl radicles, the halogenated aryl radicles being chosen from halogenated phenyl radicles and halogenated xenyl radicles wherein the halogen is chosen from chlorine and bromine, there being 1-7 atoms of halogen substituted on each of these halogenated aryl radicles and (2) 0.01-5 per cent. by weight calculated on (1) of a metal chosen from copper, magnesium and lead, this metal being present in the form of a salt of an acid chosen from aliphatic carboxylic acids having 4-9 carbon atoms in the molecule and cyclohexyl derivatives of such aliphatic acids. Examples of such acids are butyric, nonylic, caproic, 2-ethyl-hexanoic, cyclohexylnonylic, cyclohexylbutyric, cyclohexylcaproic and cyclohexylvaleric acids. The lubricant may also contain anti-corrosion agents, anti-oxidants and mutual solvents for ingredients (1) and (2). Suitable mutual solvents are the aliphatic carboxylic acids mentioned under (2) above. The lubricants may also be compounded with fillers such as the alkali metal salts or alkaline earth metal salts of fatty acids in order to produce greases.
