Abstract

The invention comprises the ester product obtained by esterifying an aliphatic mono- or di-carboxylic acid with the primary alcohol obtained from the reaction of a secondary aliphatic monohydric alcohol and ethylene oxide, the said ester being selected to have an A.S.T.M. pour point below 35 DEG F., a flash point above 300 DEG F., and a kinematic viscosity at 210 DEG F. within the range of from 2 to 60 centistokes. The preferred ester products are those having an A.S.T.M. pour point below about -15 DEG F., a flash point above about 375 DEG F., and a viscosity at 210 DEG F. within the range of 2.6 to 13 centistokes. Suitable mono- and di-carboxylic acids are caproic, 2-ethylbutyric, caprylic, 2-ethylhexoic, C8-oxo, pelargonic, capric, C10-oxo, lauric, C13-oxo, stearic, oleic, adipic, azelaic, sebacic and succinic acids. The preferred dicarboxylic acids are those containing from 4 to 10 carbon atoms. Secondary aliphatic alcohols which may be reacted with the ethylene oxide are those containing from 3 to 8 carbon atoms such as isopropyl and sec.-butyl alcohols, pentanol-2, pentanol-3, 3-methylbutanol-2, sec.-hexanols, sec.-heptanols, sec.-octanols including octanol-2 and sec.-alcohols derived from olefin hydration and by alkyl halide hydrolysis. The ester products usually contain 20 to 130 carbon atoms, preferably 25 to 100 carbon atoms. The reaction of the secondary aliphatic alcohol and ethylene oxide may be brought about by adding the ethylene oxide dropwise to the alcohol at a temperature of about 25 DEG to 50 DEG F., preferably with agitation and a catalyst. The resulting alcohol is of the formula RR1CHO(C2H4O)xH, wherein RR1CHO- is derived from the secondary aliphatic monohydric alcohol and x is an integer, and may then be esterified in a conventional manner with the aliphatic mono- or di-carboxylic acid. The following esters are referred to: di-[2-2(21-caproxyethoxy) ethyl] adipate and di-[2-(21-isopropoxyethoxy) ethyl] adipate.ALSO:A lubricating composition contains the ester obtained from the esterification of an aliphatic mono- or di-carboxylic acid with the alcohol obtained from the reaction of a secondary aliphatic monohydric alcohol and ethylene oxide, the said ester being selected to have an A.S.T.M. pour point below 35 DEG F., a flash point above 300 DEG F., and a kinematic viscosity at 210 DEG F. within the range of from 2 to 60 centistokes. The esters may be added to natural oils such as mineral oils or oils derived from plants or animals, or to synthetic lubricants. Suitable compositions are obtained by blending the esters with other dibasic acid esters such as primary alcohol esters of adipic, sebacic, glutaric and succinic acids, and with complex esters such as the alcoho-dibasic acid-glycol-dibasic acidalcohol esters. The compositions may be thickened with grease forming soaps. Other additives which may be added to the compositions are rust, corrosion and oxidation inhibitors, viscosity index improvers, and load carrying and antiwear agents.
