Abstract

The invention relates to rust inhibiting agents having the general formulae <FORM:0701993/IV (b)/1> wherein R is an alkyl, alkenyl or cycloaliphatic group preferably containing 2 to 21 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkylene group of preferably 2 to 6 carbon atoms and R11 and R111 are hydrogen or alkyl groups, the total number of carbon atoms in both R11 and R111 together preferably being not greater than 21. They may be prepared by esterifying a mono- or di-carboxylic acid with a mercapto alkanol and then reacting the ester thus formed with a fatty acid which contains one or two chlorine atoms in the a -position or the ester may be reacted with an alkali metal salt of such chlorinated acid and the resulting product converted into the free acid. The esterification may be effected with the aid of an esterification catalyst such as p-toluene sulphonic acid or sulpho salicylic acid and a solvent. The resulting mercapto alkanol is then preferably reacted with the chlorinated acid in a solvent in presence of a metallic base or the reactants are converted into their mercaptides and carboxylate salts and then reacted together, normally at about 10-90 DEG C. Suitable acids for the esterification are propionic, butyric, caproic, nonanoic, lauric, stearic, teracrylic, oleic, succinic, adipic, sebacic and erucic acids. Specified mercapto alkanols are mercapto-ethanol, mercapto-n-butanol, mercapto-isopropanol and mercapto-n-hexanol. The chlorinated acids include mono- and di-chloroacetic acids, a -chlor propionic acid, a -chloro-n-butyric acid, a -chloro isobutyric acid and a -chlorolauric acid. Suitable solvents are isopropyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol, acetone and methyl ethyl ketone, all with or without the addition of water. Examples describe products prepared by reacting mercapto-ethanol with oleic acid, lauric acid and nonanoic acid followed by reaction with mono-chlor acetic acid. The agents may be used in lubricants, liquid fuels, paints and polishes, (see Group III).ALSO:Lubricants, liquid fuels, polishes, paints and sprays comprise as rust-inhibiting agents compounds of the general formulae:- <FORM:0701993/III/1> wherein R is an alkyl, alkenyl or cyclo aliphatic group preferably containing 2 to 21 carbon atoms, R1 is an alkylene group of preferably 2 to 6 carbon atoms and R11 and R111 are hydrogen or alkyl groups, the total number of carbon atoms in both R11 and R111 together being preferably not greater than 21. The agents may be used in any petroleum hydrocarbon solvent, e.g. naphthas, spindle oils or light or heavy lubricating oil fractions. They may be used in lubricants in conjunction with detergents, pour depressants, thickeners, extreme pressure agents, plastic-type products, cut - back asphalt, microcrystalline waxes and synthetic waxes. They may be used in lubricating oils in amounts up to about 5 per cent., or in concentrates up to 50 per cent. Examples describe products obtained by reacting monochloracetic acid with intermediates obtained by reacting mercapto-ethanol with oleic acid, lauric acid and nonanoic acid respectively and their incorporation in solvent-extracted Mid-continent lubricating oil bases containing di-tert.-butyl-p-cresol as oxidation inhibitor to form turbine oils.
