Abstract

593,195. Heating metal strip by electromagnetic induction. WESTING- HOUSE ELECTRIC INTERNATIONAL CO. Feb. 5, 1945, No. 2880. Convention date, Feb. 5, 1944. [Class 39 (iii)] A metal strip 1 passes over roller 2, into a furnace 3, heat soaking chamber 4, and through a quench tank 6. The furnace 3 comprises two opposite field structures 9, 9<1> having salient poles so arranged that the flux passes perpendicularly -through the metal strip 1. To avoid excessive heating at the strip edges the field structures 30, 30<1>, Fig. 7, may be movable transversely across the face of the strip so that one edge of each field. structure 31<1> 32 is located laterally inside the strip. Automatic following of the strip edge by the field structures may be employed to accommodate wearing of the strip, or varying widths of strip, by the use of regulating means comprising : an arm member 40 carrying a light source 44 and photocell 45, an amplifier responsive to the output of the photocell, and a reversing motor operated by relays energized by the amplifier. An alternative method of reducing the heating effect at the edges of the strip is shown in Fig. 11, the field structures being rotated about a pivot 70 and supported by rollers 71, to shorten the length of heating field traversed by the strip edges.
