Class 72 A continuous process for the heat treatment of metal objects comprises subjecting the objects to a high temperature for a short time in a suitable medium to dull or darken the surface, and then subjecting them to a conventional heat treatment. As shown, applied to the treatment of metal strip, the strip is wound off a coil 2 and passed through flames from gas burners 3 which produce a temperature of 1500‹C., the strip being in the flames for such a time as will cause a darkening of the surface and the temperature of the surfaces not exceeding 200‹C. The strip then passes through an electrically heated tunnel furnace G and is recoiled at 8. The temperature of the strip may be determined before it enters the hottest zone of the furnace by a pyrometer 11 which may be traversed across the furnace and which may be used to control the speed of the strip. In the case of separate objects passing through the furnace the pyrometer may be controlled by a light sensitive cell system 16, 17 to operate only when an object is in a predetermined position. Instead of gas burners there may be used a hot liquid which may have a chemical action on the surface or a high frequency electric heater may be used. The dulling of the surface may be further improved by mechanical means, e.g. by a roughened roller.
