Abstract

1,115,715. Continuous-strip heating furnaces; furnace atmospheres. ELECTRIC FURNACE CO. 26 July, 1966 [25 Aug., 1965], No. 33530/66. Heading F4B. A continuous strip heating furnace through which strip 1 is conveyed by rollers 5 comprises a rapid preheating section 2 open-fired by burners 45, an intermediate section 3 heated by U-shaped radiant tubes, and a cooling section 4, a motion sensitive switch 91 being associated with one of drive rollers 5 by which air to said burners may be cut off if the strip stops. A thermocouple 82 in the preheating section 2 controls gas from line 70 and air from line 62 through a control pyrometer 80 and a relay 83, and also keeps damper 48 open over a stack 46. If the travel of the strip is interrupted or slowed dangerously, switch 91 closes air valve 65, gas valve 72 and damper 48, opening a gas bypass valve 95 to supply raw gas through burners 45 as a protective gas for the strip in section 2. A reducing gas, e.g. dissociated ammonia, is admitted to sections 3 and 4 from which the strip passes to a galvanizing tank, Fig. 1A (not shown).
