Abstract

1393440 Preheating furnaces KAWASAKI JUKOGYO KK 6 Dec 1972 [6 Dec 1971 11 Jan 1972 3 March 1972] 56392/72 Heading F4B A preheating furnace comprises a casing having in one zone a number of jets for hot combustion gases and a conveyer which feeds articles to be heated successively through the furnace, highspeed gas streams from the jets impinging on the articles to effect an efficient transfer of heat to the articles. In the form of Fig. 1, the articles 1 to be preheated are moved through the furnace by walking beams 3. In the jet zone a of the furnace, banks of nozzles 9 are provided above and below the articles. The outside of the casing is lined with insulating material 19 and the casing is made of heat resitant steel. Zone b is a convection zone, the heat supply being the current of hot gases leaving zone a. The interior of the casing in this zone is lined with insulating material to reduce heat losses. Articles are fed to the furnace at 15 and taken off at 16. In another form (Fig. 4, not shown) both zones a and b have hot gas jets, the gas being taken off at the end of zone a and its pressure increased by a blower before being applied to the nozzles of zone b. In the form of Fig. 6 the articles 1 pass through a preheating zone c, a heating zone b and a soaking zone a. The articles are moved over a skid 2 by a pusher being subject in zone c to hot jets from nozzles 4. Nozzles 4 are supplied with combustion gas from header 16 by a blower. After being moved through zone c by the pusher, the articles may be moved through zones b and a by a walking beam conveyer. In the form of Fig. 9 there are four zones, zone d having nozzles 4 and zones c, b and a as before. Hot gas for the nozzles is extracted from the flue between zones b and c. The hot gases in duct 6 are driven towards the nozzle duct 5 by nozzle 8 to which is applied gas from flue e compressed by blower 9. Compressed gas is also applied to nozzle 13 to form a film of gas 16 to seal between zones c and d. The pressure in the interior of the furnace is controlled by controlling the dampers 14 in the ducts 6. The jet zone d may be separated from the furnace zones a, b, c, Fig. 11 (not shown).
