1,030,562. Uncoiling. BLAW-KNOX CO. Feb. 9, 1965 [April 1, 1964], No. 5677/65. Heading B3E. Metal strip uncoiled from a coil C, using a magnetic roll 39, and passed between pinch rolls 6-9 for a further processing step. The coil C, supported on chain-driven blocker rolls 12 and 13, is positioned beneath the axis of an axially retractable mandrel 1 using hydraulic rams 23 and 20 (Fig. 5, not shown): The roller 39 is then pivoted on its supporting arms 34 about axis B by a ram 45 to contact the free end of the strip. The roll 39 is raised and the rollers 12 and 13 rotated to produce a loop 6, Fig. 5 (not shown), the roll 39 then being driven from a motor 44 to direct the strip between pinch rolls 6 and 7. Either at this stage, or before the uncoiling, the coil is raised so that the mandrel 1 can be inserted in the coil, the rollers 12 and 13 then being removed. A chisel member 56 may be used, if necessary, to unpeel the leading end of the strip, the chisel being advanced by a ram 57 on a pivotally adjustable frame 51. The roll 39 preferably is formed by a permanent magnet but it may be energized electromagnetically.
