868,867. Making sheet metal. WELLMAN, SMITH OWEN ENGINEERING CORPORATION Ltd. Dec. 16, 1959 [Dec. 17, 1958], No. 40794/58. Classes 83 (2) and 83 (4). A method of removing the service tails 5, 15 from rolled and coiled stainless steel &c. strip 9 comprises mounting the coil on a reel 1, feeding the strip from the reel through a shear 3 to a machine 4 for for coiling the leading tail 5, operating the shear to sever tail 5 substantially after it has been coiled by machine 4, feeding the strip forward into softening and/or descaling &c. apparatus (not shown), operating the shear again to sever the trailing tail 15, and winding the severed trailing tail back on to the reel 1. At least one of the coiling rolls 11-13 is adjustable to deflect tail 5 upwardly or downwardly into a loose coil, or the tail may be close-coiled, as on a mandrel. After tail 5 has been severed, roll 12 is raised (Fig. 2, not shown) to allow the strip to pass straight through machine 4. The severed leading end of the strip may be joined to the trailing end of a preceding strip 9, as by an electric stop or seam welder 6. Pinch rolls 2, 7, 8 and 10 are provided.
