Abstract
A decarbonizing and degreasing composition comprises a coal tar distillate containing phenolic compounds, an emulsifying agent and an aqueous solution containing an alkali metal silicate. The emulsion may be alkaline but the titratable alkali content is not more than 6 per cent. The solvent specified comprises a creosote oil, preferably neutralized by alkali. The emulsifying agents are preferably naphthenic and fatty acid soaps. The molecular proportion of silica to alkali metal oxide in the silicate is preferably not greater than 1 to 1, e.g., sodium metasilicate. The parts to be cleaned are coated or sprayed with the emulsion and then washed with water.
