Abstract
A dry cleaning liquid having a reduced tendency to corrode metals comprises an organic dry cleaning solvent and at least one organic boron compound. The organic boron compound may be dissolved directly in the organic dry cleaning solvent, or it may first be dissolved in a liquid dry cleaning detergent and this solution dissolved in the organic dry cleaning solvent. If the boron compound is dissolved directly in the dry cleaning solvent it may consist of an organic ester of boric acid, e.g. tri-stearyl borate, trihexylene glycol di-borate, tri-di-isobutyl carbinyl borate, tri-n-butyl borate, or a partial ester, e.g. sodium sorbitol borate, potassium sorbitol borate, sodium hexylene glycol borate, sodium glyceryl borate, sodium polyethylene. The dry cleaning detergent preferably has a pH of 7.5 to 8.5. An experimental test is described in which the dry cleaning solvent is perchloroethylene, and the active ingredients of the detergent are petroleum sulphonate, potassium dodecyl benzene sulphonate, and a nonyl phenol ethylene oxide condensate.ALSO:In a dry cleaning process effected in an apparatus having one or more internal surfaces of, or including, copper, brass, mild steel or galvanised steel, corrosion of such surfaces is reduced or prevented by the use of a dry cleaning liquid comprising an organic dry cleaning solvent and at least one organic boron compound. The organic boron compound may be dissolved directly in the organic dry cleaning solvent, or it may first be dissolved in a liquid dry cleaning detergent and this solution dissolved in the organic dry cleaning solvent. If the boron compound is dissolved directly in the dry cleaning solvent it may consist of an organic ester of boric acid.
