Abstract
589,617. Musical drums &c. DALLAS & SONS; Ltd., J. E., and PERCY, C. W. Jan. 21, 1945, No. 23151/44. [Class 88 (ii)] Fluid and especially liquid pressure means are provided for adjusting the tension of the vellum of a percussion musical instrument such as a drum. The batter vellum 16 (Fig. 1) of a drum is held by a a captive vellum hoop 15 and a counter hoop 12 mounted on the shell 11. The tension of the vellum is maintained by an annular bearing member 32 which is provided with sockets 31 and is pressed against the vellum by the shank portions 27 of piston members fitted in cylinders 24 attached to an annular pipe 21. The pipe and cylinders are charged with fluid, preferably thick grease, and pressure is applied by rotating the manual . control member 35 which is connected by an internal screw-thread to an extension 34 of the pipe 21. The inward movement of the piston is limited by a cross-pin provided near the outer end of the shank. A separate pressure system may be provided to control the pressure of the snare vellum or both vellums may be controlled hy the same system. In a modification, the pistons may operate levers 45 (Fig. 5) centrally pivoted at 46 to draw counter hoops 38 together to tighten the two vellums. The pressure system may be either inside or outside the shell of the drum.
