Abstract

610,151. Musical drums. DALLAS & SONS, Ltd., J. E., and PERCY, C. W. March 28, 1946, No. 9687. [Class 88 (ii)] A double vellum drum is mounted with its axis vertical and has a foot-operated means for adjusting the tension of the upper vellum, to produce tom-tom and tympano effects, and a foot-operated beater for striking the lower vellum to produce a bass drum effect. The tension of both vellums is adjusted initially in the usual manner by hoops 7 and threaded rods 18. Thereafter the tension of the.upper vellum 13 can be increased by upward pressure of an internal hoop 20 mounted on rods 25 and which is operated through linkage 21, 27, 28, 32 by a pedal 37. The central rod 32 passes through a reinforced hole in the lower vellum 16. The pedal 40 actuates a beater 39 which strikes the lower vellum, this pedal being attached to one of the supporting legs 12. In a modification, the tensioning device is operated through a flexible cable by a pedal placed suitably for use by a seated player, and in this form the pedal is incorporated in a double control, Figs. 4 and 5 (not shown), in which a second pedal operates cymbals. The control for the tensioning of the upper vellum may incorporate a locking device of the type described in Specification 590,803 and may also operate hydraulically as described in Specification 589,617.
