Abstract

692,036. Stuffing-box substitutes. MORRISON, J. L. M., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 5, 1951 [March 3, 1950], No. 5423/50. Class 122(v). A sealing gland for an operating rod 10 passing into a high pressure vessel 11 comprises a rod sealing sleeve 15 surrounded and engaged by a sealing ring 13 of resilient material axially supported by retaining members 12, 14 of which the one 12 disposed inwardly of the vessel is rigidly secured to the inner end of the sleeve and affords an end surface subject to the pressure in the vessel of larger area than its area of contact with the sealing ring 13. The sealing sleeve 15, preferably of metal, is integral with the retaining member 12 and the other retaining member 14 is screwed into the vessel wall but may be integral therewith, the gland then being assembled from the interior of the vessel. The sealing ring 13 may be of natural or synthetic rubber or polyvinyl chloride.
